Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a young girl the carnival barker father passed away, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left the school in the span of two years in order to explore a career in acting. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got a job in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. While in New York, she worked at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet by working as an usher throughout the day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She has also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
